Do the crime, you do the time.
How many times on TV do you hear that Police have pulled over a driver on the road, tested him, or her for alcohol, all clear, test for drugs! bingo, positive. Driver is charged in court fined five or six hundred dollars, which he or she usually doesn’t have and in 24 hours is back behind the wheel again. He or she then goes out, robs someone to get the money for the next fix and is back driving under the influence.
This could all be handled differently: The offender should go to jail and then to rehab – the government already have a plan for this. If the offender can’t afford the rehab he or she applies to Centrelink for the dole; they supply the dole, which pays for the rehab, with a little left over for the offender. Eventually the offender is clean and hopefully has learnt his or her lesson. A good outcome and without the drama of these people being on the road again in 24 hours high on drugs. It’s not that difficult, believe me, I know.
My suggestion for the “truth in sentencing” is to abandon the parole board completely. How many times do you hear of somebody committing an horrific crime of rape or murder or both, getting a light sentence, serving that time, being released on parole and killing again. Some poor innocent person is dead because this criminal was released too soon.
A death like this does not only affect one person, it affects the whole family and all of the deceased person’s friends and contacts. So let’s bring an end to this nonsense, ban the parole board now, and save innocent lives. For foreign criminals it should be, into court, fine, jail and on release, deportation.
